Features
Material & Design
Constructed from medical-grade PVC that is kink-resistant, non-toxic, and biocompatible. They are often thermo-sensitive, softening at body temperature to enhance patient comfort.
Insertion & Comfort
The tip is usually closed and rounded (a-traumatic) with four staggered side holes (eyes) for efficient suction, drainage, or feeding, reducing trauma.
Safety & Monitoring
The material is transparent, allowing for easy monitoring of fluid flow. They generally come with a distal radiopaque line, ensuring accurate placement via X-ray.
Sterility
Primarily sold as sterile, disposable (single-use) items to minimize infection risks.
Gastric Tube Materials
Silicone
Known for being soft and comfortable, reducing trauma to patients, and is commonly used for long-term gastrostomy (G) tubes and some nasogastric (NG) tubes.
Polyurethane (PUR)
Stronger and more durable than silicone, with thinner walls that make insertion easier.
Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC):
Generally used for temporary, short-term drainage or feeding, such as Salem Sump™ tubes. However, these can stiffen over time, making them less suitable for long-term use.
Other Materials
Some tubes may be constructed from specialized copolymers. Modern tubes are typically latex-free, and often include radiopaque materials for identification on X-rays.

Gastric Decompression and Drainage
Removes excess fluids, air, or toxic substances from the stomach, commonly used after surgery or for poisoning.
